What is pilates?
Pilates is a form of low impact exercise that focuses on the core muscles – the deep muscles near the skeleton around your head, shoulders, spine and pelvis. The core is where a lot of movements start from and it controls your alignment and stability. Pilates links your breath with your movements to help you relax and focus.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in 1926 in New York. In the beginning his clients were dancers and boxers. After he died Joseph’s students formed different schools. One of those is Body Control Pilates (BCP). Lynne Robinson (the founder of BCP) took the very difficult “classical” mat exercises and broke them down so normal people could achieve them. Building up slowly with the aim to getting to the classical exercises.
Greville trained with BCP.

Why do Pilates with Greville?
Greville is a professional aerialist and all-round circus performer with a background in gymnastics and dance. He has been teaching aerial and acrobatics (1:1 and group classes) since 2008.
Like many people Greville came to Pilates because of a back injury – he was recommended it by a physiotherapist. Pilates is the reason he is still a working aerialist in his late 40’s! It is part of his training regime and he uses many exercises and concepts whilst teaching circus classes. Greville graduated from the Body Control Pilates matwork course in Jan 2022.
